Few moments in the young republic's history have been pictured as often as George Washington's inauguration as the first president of the United States. The ceremony took place on April 30, 1789, on the balcony of Federal Hall in New York City, where Chancellor Robert Livingston administered the oath of office to Washington before a crowd gathered below. Printmakers in the following decades returned to the scene again and again, often turning it into a patriotic tableau of the nation's founding. The shelflist card for this print gives no date, so its exact origin is uncertain, but its subject ties it directly to that foundational day.
