This print takes its subject from George Washington's Farewell Address, the open letter he published in September 1796 to announce he would not seek a third presidential term. Rather than a scene of action, the address was a written statement of advice to the young nation, warning against the damage that political factions could do and urging Americans to avoid permanent foreign alliances. Its later reprinting in engraved form made it a familiar patriotic emblem. The print is undated, and the name tied to it on its record is J. C. Buttre, a New York engraver and publisher of the nineteenth century.
