This view records the fire of June 22, 1851, the last of the major blazes that swept San Francisco that year and destroyed much of its young business district. The picture is a halftone reproduction of an 1851 lithograph credited to a San Francisco firm, though the catalog notes that this attribution comes from an unverified caption card. The city's rapid growth during the Gold Rush meant that many of its buildings were wooden and closely packed, so fires spread quickly. Images like this one show how residents and printmakers chose to document a disaster that was still fresh.
