A New York printing of *Goody Two-Shoes*, the tale of a poor girl who saves for years to buy her first pair of shoes, stands out on a gallery board of city views. The story was first published in London in the 1760s, most often credited to the bookseller John Newbery, and it became one of the earliest English books written specifically for children. Its heroine's virtue was so admired that "goody two-shoes" entered the language as a name for a prim, overly good person. This edition's ten pictures, engraved for an American audience, show how the tale traveled across the Atlantic and was reprinted for young readers in the United States.
