This engraving is a New York edition of *Goody Two-Shoes*, a story first published in London in the 1760s and among the earliest books written specifically for children. Its tale of a poor orphan girl who learns to read and rises through hard work and virtue made the book enormously popular, and American publishers reprinted it for decades. The caption card gives no date, so the print's exact year is uncertain. Its ten illustrations, published together, show how this sentimental moral tale was packaged for young readers.
