Labeled "A.J. Shell" on its negative sleeve, this April 11, 1924 glass plate names its subject only by initials and surname, and the Library notes that the title itself is unverified. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio active in the early twentieth century, made many plates like this one, and Herbert A. French gave it to the Library in 1947. As a glass negative, the image may show streaks and faint blemishes from the natural deterioration of its original coatings.
