Soldiers, onlookers perched in the trees, and the Capitol dome in the distance frame this 1865 view of an execution, the moment a soldier springs the trap. The subject headings link the scene to Henry Wirz, the Confederate officer who commanded the Andersonville prison in Georgia. A military commission convicted him of war crimes, and he was hanged in Washington in November 1865. The gallows stood in the yard of the Old Capitol Prison, and the wide view places the crowd beside the city's most recognizable landmark.
