The Pavilion of the Gas Industry was one of the many exhibit halls at the Exposition Universelle of 1889, the Paris world's fair held to mark the centenary of the French Revolution and famous for the Eiffel Tower built as its entrance arch. Gas companies used such pavilions to show lighting, heating, and cooking technologies to a crowd of millions. The print comes from the Albert Tissandier Collection, and the record notes it may be the work of Napoleon Dufeu, a Paris photographer who documented the fair.
