The picture shows the Palais Lumineux, or "Palace of Light," one of the illuminated structures at the Exposition Universelle of 1900 in Paris. The fair ran from spring through autumn of 1900 and drew millions of visitors who came to see the newest technology of the century's close, and electric lighting was a central attraction, with buildings and grounds lit up after dark. The print bears the mark "N.D. Phot.," the signature of the Neurdein studio, a Paris firm that photographed the exposition extensively. Its images are among the most detailed surviving records of how the fair looked to contemporary visitors.
