Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom and the arts, presides over this 1897 poster for the seventh International Art Exhibition at the Glaspalast, the Crystal Palace in Munich. The image reproduces a drawing by Franz Stuck, a painter and draftsman who helped found the Munich Secession, the artists' group that broke from the city's conservative academy in 1892. The pairing of a classical goddess with a modern, reform-minded exhibition reflects the period's tension between tradition and new artistic currents. Color halftone reproduction like this one allowed posters to be printed cheaply in large numbers, so they could be pasted up across the city.
