The sitter named here is Daniel Webster, the New Hampshire-born lawyer who went on to represent Massachusetts in the Senate and serve as secretary of state under several presidents. Webster was one of the most celebrated orators of the early 19th century, and his speeches defending the Union in the debates over nullification and slavery made him a figure whose likeness was widely reproduced. The record gives no date for this print, and the shelflist card links it to a name, Bradford, that has not been verified, so the maker and origin remain uncertain.
