Catalogued as "Coburgh P.O.," this group portrait places a family at a small rural post office in Custer County, Nebraska, where sod buildings and a windmill are part of the record. Settlers who arrived on the treeless plains in the 1880s often cut blocks of sod for walls because timber was scarce, and windmills pumped water for households and livestock. Rural post offices were frequently housed in a homesteader's home or a general store, which made them gathering places for mail and news. The albumen print's soft tones and formal pose reflect the portrait conventions of the late 1880s, when photographers were increasingly documenting western settlement.
