The Cascades at Constantine show a stretch of falling water beside the city, which sits on high rock above a deep gorge in northeastern Algeria. Constantine was under French control from 1837, and by the late 1890s it was a busy colonial town that tourists and travel publishers regularly pictured. This print comes from the Detroit Photographic Company's catalog of scenic views, issued around 1899 under the photochrom process, a color method that layered several printed stones to produce a painted-looking image. Notice how the rushing water and the rocky walls are rendered in soft, layered tones.
