Ames, Iowa, in the 1900s was a small railroad and college town built around Iowa State College, the state's land-grant school of agriculture and mechanic arts, which had opened in 1869 on prairie land a few miles north of the tracks. The Chicago and North Western line ran through the town, carrying grain, livestock, and farm goods out to market, and the college drew students from farm families across Iowa who came to learn scientific agriculture, veterinary medicine, and engineering. Most residents earned their living through the college, the railroad shops and depot, or local businesses that served surrounding farms. Life centered on campus events, church congregations, and the steady rhythm of trains, and the town was known across the state as the home of the agricultural college.
