Camp Clark was built outside Nevada, the seat of Vernon County in western Missouri, in 1917, soon after the United States entered the First World War in April of that year. The army named the cantonment for Champ Clark, the Missouri congressman who was then Speaker of the House, and it filled quickly with draftees and volunteers who needed housing, drill fields, and mess halls on short notice. Nevada was a small farming and trading town, and its economy depended on livestock, grain, and the railroad that moved them to market. The panorama shows how much of the countryside was given over to rows of temporary barracks and training grounds, a sharp change for a town that had known mostly farm work and county business.
