Kansas City, Missouri, in 1917 was a rail and livestock center, where the stockyards, packing houses, and wholesale warehouses drew workers from across the Plains and the Ozarks. The city had grown well past 250,000 people in the previous decade, and Union Station, opened in 1914, moved passengers and freight through a dense web of lines. That spring, the United States entered the First World War, and the city's factories and packing plants shifted toward wartime demand, while women working in local industries faced long hours and low wages. The National Women's Trade Union League, which pressed for shorter hours, minimum wages, and union rights for women, held a gathering in Kansas City that year, and this group portrait records the delegates who came to the meeting.
