Few American mining towns were stacked so steeply into their hills as Bisbee, and this 9.5 by 50 inch panorama captures that sprawl in one long sweep. Bisbee grew up in a canyon in the Mule Mountains of southeastern Arizona around copper mining, and its houses, stores and mine structures climb the slopes on either side of the gulch. The print was registered for copyright in April 1909 by the West Coast Art Co., whose listed address was Los Angeles. Its record names mining as the principal subject, a reminder that the town's layout followed the ore beneath it.
