This panorama of Milan is one of eight city views bound into a single album, the others including Genoa, Pisa, Nice, Verona, and Vienna, and its wide format was meant to show the city's whole skyline at once. Around 1900, Milan was a fast-growing industrial and commercial center in northern Italy, and the cathedral's Gothic spires, rising above the older streets, would have stood out as the city's landmark. Panoramic prints like this one were popular with travelers who wanted a record of places they had visited.
