Rather than a single close view, this picture stretches across an entire drill field, with ranks of soldiers in full dress set out across the open ground and a band at their head. The record dates it to the 1880s, when formal parades were a central part of Army life and wide views like this one showed the scale of a post's ceremonial space. The cyanotype process, which yields the familiar blue tone, was inexpensive and reliable at the time. Look closely at the lines of troops to see how precisely the formations were kept.
