Eleven separate parts join to form this panorama of the plateau above Sevastopol, the Russian naval port that British and French forces were besieging in 1855. Roger Fenton made the view during his spring visit to the Crimea, when he photographed the British army's tent lines spread across the open ground before the town. Because the scene is built from several parts, the camps read as one continuous band of tents across the plain. The siege had begun in late 1854 and was still grinding on when the picture was taken.
