A fire escape on the White House is an unexpected subject for a building usually pictured as a formal monument, and this view puts its practical, everyday side in front of the lens. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded the city's streets, buildings and public life in the early twentieth century, made the picture, and its title and date of about 1923 come from the company's own records. The image survives on a glass negative, a fragile format that often shows streaks and blemishes as its coating deteriorates. Herbert A. French gave the plate to the Library of Congress in 1947.
