The telegraph room was where messages moved in and out of the White House by wire, and this glass negative, dated August 1, 1923, shows it in the final days of Warren G. Harding's presidency. Harding died in San Francisco on August 2 while returning from a trip to Alaska. The National Photo Company, a Washington firm that documented the capital and its officials, made pictures like this one. Look for the streaks and blemishes across the glass, which come from natural deterioration of the original coating.
