The Blue Room is one of the formal reception rooms on the State Floor of the White House, set apart from its neighbors by its oval shape and its blue silk damask walls. Its curved south wall opens onto the South Portico, a feature that gives the room its distinctive character. The space has long been used for receiving guests and for official photographs, and its furnishings reflect the Federal style that shaped the executive residence in the nineteenth century. The room has been redecorated many times over the years, so the version visitors see in any given picture reflects the taste of its era.
