The Blue Room is the oval reception room on the State Floor of the White House, and this view around 1904 shows it as it looked just after the early twentieth-century restoration of the mansion. The room's curved walls and formal furnishings reflect the Empire style chosen in the early nineteenth century, when the room was used for receptions and official gatherings. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many photographs of American landmarks and scenic views in this period, made the image. Its interiors of public buildings are useful records of how these rooms were arranged before later renovations.
