The Blue Room is the oval parlor on the ground floor of the White House, on the central axis facing the South Portico, and this c1890 print shows its interior as it looked in the late nineteenth century. The room took its name from the blue damask that covered its walls and furniture in that era, and it was used for formal receptions, where presidents and their wives greeted guests. The record is based on an older caption card with later revisions, so its exact date is approximate, but the view offers a useful glimpse of how the space was furnished before the major renovations of the early twentieth century.
