The Green Room is one of the formal parlors on the ground floor of the White House, and this view shows it as a finished, carefully arranged interior rather than a working room. Its name comes from the green silk damask that has covered its walls at various points in the building's history, and the room has long served as a small reception space for official guests. Because the White House has been remodeled many times since 1800, interior views like this one are useful for seeing how presidential families furnished and decorated the rooms in different eras.
