The Green Room is one of the formal reception rooms on the ground floor of the White House, named for its green silk wall covering and furnishings. This photograph, dated somewhere between 1880 and 1930, shows the room in the decades when the executive mansion was being slowly modernized while keeping its ceremonial character. Interior views like this one were valued by officials, designers and the public alike, because the White House was both a family home and the setting for diplomatic receptions and state dinners. The Green Room's furnishings and décor often changed with each administration, so a view from this period captures a specific moment in that ongoing story.
