Few rooms in the White House have kept their name as steadily as the Green Room, which takes its title from its color scheme and sits on the building's State Floor among the formal parlors. This c. 1890 photograph records it in the years before the major early-twentieth-century renovations altered the building's interiors. Like the other reception rooms, it was used for small dinners, receptions, and social calls, so its furnishings reflected both the nineteenth-century taste of the era and the presidency's ceremonial role. The image is a useful record of how the executive mansion looked to visitors of the late 1800s.
