The Green Room, one of the formal ground-floor parlors of the White House, takes its name from the green silk that covers its walls. This c1904 view by the Detroit Publishing Company captures it shortly after the 1902 restoration, when architects working under Theodore Roosevelt aimed to return the state rooms toward their early nineteenth-century character. The firm was known for its large catalog of American views, so the picture also shows how the presidential residence was presented to the public at the turn of the century.
