The Green Room is one of the State Floors' formal parlors, and this stereograph captures it as a visitor of the late 1800s or early 1900s would have seen it, with its furnishings arranged for receiving guests. Stereo cards like this were made to be viewed through a special hand viewer that fused two slightly offset photographs into a single image with depth, and they were a popular way for Americans to tour distant places and famous buildings from home. J.F. Jarvis, the Washington, D.C. publisher named on the card, sold views of the capital and its monuments to this market. The room's green color scheme, which gave it its name, remains a point of interest for anyone comparing the interior to later renovations.
