Concord, Massachusetts, a farming and mill town on the Concord and Assabet rivers, was the site of this September encampment, which the title identifies as Camp Massachusetts. The town had been the scene of the first fighting of the Revolution in April 1775, when militia met British troops at the North Bridge, and that memory shaped how residents saw their community. By the time of the camp, the Fitchburg Railroad ran through town, linking Concord to Boston and to the mill villages along the Assabet, where wool and cotton were manufactured. Concord was also home to writers and reformers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, so local civic life mixed farm, factory, and literary pride. Camp life would have brought soldiers, drilling, and visitors into a town that was otherwise quiet.
