Lexington, Massachusetts, is where the first armed clash of the American Revolution took place on April 19, 1775. Captain John Parker's militia company had gathered on the town green that morning, and eight of his men were killed when British regulars marching from Boston toward Concord opened fire on them. At the time, Lexington was a farming town of fields and woodlands along the road between Boston and Concord, and its residents knew the green as the site of that bloodshed. In the decades that followed, the town marked the anniversary with memorials and public observances, and the day became known locally as Patriots' Day. This view, titled "Journée de Lexington," presents the town through that single spring morning.
