Lexington, Massachusetts, was a small farming town of scattered homes, meetinghouses, and mills on the road northwest of Boston in April 1775. Its residents grew corn and raised livestock, and many had recently been drawn into the colonial dispute with Britain over taxes and control of local government. On the morning of April 19, 1775, a company of British regulars marching toward Concord met armed militia on the town green, and the first shots of the American Revolution were fired there. Eight Lexington militiamen were killed, and the fighting spread along the road to Concord and back toward Boston that day. For the townspeople, the green became a place of memory, and a monument erected there in 1799 kept the event before later generations.
