Lexington, Massachusetts, was a farming town of scattered houses, a meetinghouse, and a common, about 11 miles northwest of Boston on the road to Concord, when the Revolutionary War began there in April 1775. Early on the morning of April 19, a company of local militia under Captain John Parker stood on the green as British regulars under Major John Pitcairn advanced from Boston to seize colonial military stores at Concord. Shots were fired on the green, and eight militiamen were killed. The fighting continued that day at Concord and along the road back to Boston, and the town came to be remembered as the site of the first armed clash of the war. Residents of Lexington would have known the place for that green and the men who stood on it.
