Lexington, Massachusetts, was a farming town of scattered houses, meetinghouse, and common land on the road between Boston and Concord in April 1775. Tensions with royal authority had been building for years, and British troops occupied Boston while colonial leaders organized militia companies in the countryside. On the morning of April 19, a column of British regulars reached Lexington Green, where a company of local militia under Captain John Parker had assembled. Gunfire broke out, though no one knows for certain who fired first, and eight Lexington men were killed. The fighting continued along the road to Concord and back toward Boston, and residents of the region would long remember the day as the start of the war.
