Concord, Massachusetts, sits at the center of this view of the battleground, where on April 19, 1775, colonial militia clashed with British regulars at the North Bridge and along the road toward Lexington. By the late nineteenth century the town was known both for that opening day of the Revolution and for its writers and thinkers, including Ralph Waldo Emerson and Louisa May Alcott. The Fitchburg Railroad had reached Concord in 1844, linking the farming village to Boston and to inland mill towns, and the town's commemorations grew more formal after the Minute Man statue by Daniel Chester French was dedicated at the North Bridge in 1875 for the centennial. Residents would have recognized the landscape as ground that was both working countryside and a shrine to the nation's beginnings.
