Concord, Massachusetts, in April 1775 was a farming and milling town on the Concord River, where families raised grain and livestock and ran small mills along the water. Provincial leaders had stored powder, flour, and other supplies there, and on April 19, 1775, British regulars marched out from Boston to seize them. Local militia companies, many of them minutemen who could assemble on short notice, gathered near the North Bridge and faced the redcoats, and the shots exchanged there marked the first armed clash of the day. Townspeople who lived through that morning knew Concord as the place where the war's first fighting reached their own village, and this view of minutemen running through the streets reflects that memory.
