Fritz Maisel was a third baseman for the New York Highlanders, the American League club that became the Yankees in 1913, and this glass negative captures him in his uniform at a time when the team was still finding its footing in the city. Maisel, a Maryland native, was known for his keen batting eye and his ability to draw walks, and he went on to play several seasons in New York. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs made by the Bain News Service, which supplied pictures of ballplayers and sporting events to newspapers across the country in the early twentieth century.
