Doc Crandall, photographed here in his New York Giants uniform, was one of the team's pitchers during the early 1910s, when John McGraw's club was among the strongest in the National League. Crandall was known as a reliable arm in relief, a role that was becoming more important as managers began relying on specialists to close out close games. This glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, whose news photographs document the sporting and civic life of New York in the years before 1920.
