From O'Neill Point on the rim, this view includes a lone man at the edge of the gorge, and his small figure makes the drop into the canyon easier to grasp. The Detroit Publishing Company issued the print around 1902, when rail service was bringing a growing number of visitors to the Grand Canyon. The company sold views of American scenery to travelers and armchair viewers alike, and images like this helped shape how the public pictured the Southwest. The layered rock walls below the rim hold more than a billion years of geologic history.
