Here Theodore Roosevelt is mounted for a ride at the Grand Canyon in Arizona, a stop on his 1903 western tour as president. During that visit he urged listeners to leave the canyon as it is, a remark often quoted in the history of conservation. The card was issued by Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm that sold stereographs for home viewers, and the paired images were meant to give the scene a sense of depth through a stereoscope. Cards like this were a popular way for turn-of-the-century Americans to see distant landmarks.
