Edwin Forbes's view of Pickett's Charge focuses on the moment the Confederate assault reached the Union center near the grove of trees, on the afternoon of July 3, 1863, at about 3 p.m. Forbes was a Union artist who followed the Army of the Potomac and made field sketches that he later worked up into finished images. The stamp on the back names George Rowney & Co., a London firm that sold artists' materials, which suggests the work was produced with supplies from that maker. Forbes's depiction of the charge is worth studying for its attention to the open ground and the crowded line of Union defenders.
