Main Street in the village of Lake George, at the southern end of the lake in upstate New York, is preserved here on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country to document towns, resorts, and scenery, made many views like this one in the years around 1900. Lake George drew summer visitors by rail and steamboat during that period, and its village street scenes capture the commercial life that served them. The negative reached the Library of Congress as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
