Sutter's Fort, known in its early years as New Helvetia, stands out as one of the few surviving frontal images of the adobe compound John Sutter built in the Sacramento Valley in the 1839 to 1841 period. Swiss-born Sutter established the settlement as an agricultural and trading center, and the fort later became a waypoint for emigrants as the Gold Rush drew people west in 1849. This lithograph, dated to that year, captures the fort at the moment its name and role were shifting from a remote Mexican-era outpost toward the busy gateway of California's mining boom.
