The title places Marines boarding the Navy ship Prairie at Boston, a scene of the kind that drew newspaper photographers to the city's harbor when troops and crews were being moved by sea. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the output of the Bain News Service, a commercial wire photo agency that supplied images to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and its title comes from caption data the agency wrote on the negatives or cards, which was not always checked. Still, the glass negative format and the agency's news work point to the 1910s or 1920s, and the image shows how port cities served as staging points for military movements of that era.
