Few posters on this board tie a state's tourism pitch so directly to the Pennsylvania Dutch community, and this 1936 design centers on families connected to that heritage. Produced under the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, it reflects a New Deal effort to employ artists while encouraging travel within the state during the Depression. The color woodcut technique, with its flat blocks of color and bold outlines, gave many WPA posters a folk-art quality that suited regional subjects like this one. The poster shows how Pennsylvania presented its rural traditions and family life to visitors in the 1930s.
