Ponca City, Oklahoma, in 1927 was a town shaped by oil, which had drawn wells, refineries, and workers to Kay County after strikes beginning around 1911. Its best-known attraction was the 101 Ranch, the sprawling cattle operation run by the Miller brothers, whose headquarters lay just outside town. The 101 Ranch Show, a Wild West exhibition of roping, bronc riding, and staged scenes of frontier life, drew crowds from across the region and carried the ranch's name well beyond Oklahoma. Residents knew the place as a rodeo town as much as an oil town, and the show's mix of ranch work and spectacle recalled a frontier that had only just given way to statehood in 1907.
