Dewey, Oklahoma, sat in Washington County in the northeast part of the state, on land that had been part of Indian Territory until statehood in November 1907. The town took its name from Admiral George Dewey, the naval hero of the Spanish-American War, and its economy rested on the cement works and the surrounding farms and ranches. By 1911 the region was still settling into its new status as part of a state, and local life centered on the courthouse, churches, and the rail and freight traffic that moved goods in and out. Contests like this roping event drew ranch hands, townspeople, and visitors from nearby communities, and they showed how working cattle skills had become public entertainment in the new state.
