Ponca City, Oklahoma, in 1927 was a boomtown shaped by oil. A strike in the area in 1911 had drawn prospectors, drillers, and supply merchants, and the Marland Oil Company's operations made the town one of the state's busiest centers of petroleum work. Nearby, the Miller Brothers' 101 Ranch was famous across the Southwest for its cattle, its horses, and its traveling Wild West show, which combined riding, roping, and staged frontier scenes for paying crowds. This panoramic view records one of those performances, when cowboys and ranch hands, many of them working ranch people, turned the arena into a stage for the region's rodeo tradition. Local residents would have known the show as a point of civic pride, a rare chance for a young oil town to be seen as part of the cattle country that surrounded it.
