Evanston, Illinois, in 1927 was a lakefront college town just north of Chicago, shaped by Northwestern University, which had been founded there in 1851. The university's football team played in the Western Conference, the league now called the Big Ten, and its home games drew visiting crowds from across the state, including fans traveling up from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Evanston was also known for its temperance traditions and its strict limits on liquor, which set it apart from the wider Chicago area. Commuter trains carried many residents to jobs in the city, so the town's daily rhythm depended on the rail lines running south along the lake. For Evanston residents, a game against Illinois was a fall event that brought students, alumni, and townspeople together in the stands.
